Attorney Matthew R. Arnold answering the question: “How is the amount of child support decided in North Carolina?”
Marc Anthony is in the middle of fighting a bitter child support case against his ex-wife and former Miss Universe contestant Dayanara Torres. Torres claims that Anthony should be paying far more each month than he currently is due to a huge boom in the Latin singer’s income.
As part of the child support fight, Anthony was required to fill out new paperwork regarding his income and assets and it shows that he is doing quite well for himself. Anthony claims to earn a total of $1.25 million per month and says that he is worth $20.8 million. Anthony credits income from record sales, concert tours and his clothing line at Kohl’s for the financial success.
Torres argues that because Anthony is now making much more than he was when they initially divorced, her children should benefit in the form of increased child support payments. Torres wants the support to increase dramatically, from $13,000 to $112,000 per month. Anthony balks at the figure, saying that he pays Torres more than enough money to comfortably provide for the children.
According to Anthony, he pays Torres a total of $28,400 per month when spousal support is included with child support. Given this large and tax-free income, she should be more than capable of providing a decent home for the children to live in. However, Torres claims that she has had to sell her previous house due to inadequate funds and is now living in a tiny apartment in the San Fernando Valley with her young sons. Torres says that the lives of her two boys are wildly different than those of the two children Anthony shares with Jennifer Lopez. She claims that Anthony and Lopez lavish money on the children and that they want for nothing.
For his part, Anthony blames Torres’ financial mismanagement for her current situation. Anthony says he does not believe he should have to pay more money simply because his ex-wife squanders tens of thousands of dollars each and every month. Anthony also points out that he has other bills, including child support for the twins he had with Lopez. When the two divorced back in 2011, Anthony was ordered to pay Lopez $18,000 a month. This means that between spousal support and child support for four kids, Anthony is currently spending around $45,000 per month, a sizable amount regardless of your financial circumstances.
